Recently, I taught an online class for RUM (
Royal University of the Midrealm). This class was an Introduction to Blackwork Embroidery. I briefly discussed the history of blackwork embroidery, along with teaching the basics of how to do this historical embroidery.

Hi!
ReplyDeleteYou have used a bit of my work in your YouTube clip, so I thought I would make a few points.
You show a few Mamluk embroideries that are actually pattern darning. They make have been used with double running on occasion, but not often. A few other stitches were used too, like stem, split, chain, couching, and gobelin.
You also did a few comparisons between English and extant Mamluk textiles. The English pictures were obviously free hand designs.
Can I recommend reading the works of Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, Louise Mackie, Marianne Ellis, the Stillmans etc, as they also discuss where the embroidery was used while covering the extensive trade ties with the Venetians.
Good luck!
Yours,
Miriam Staples
Thank you for the information. I will look into that!
